Christiaan is an art renewal enthusiast and believes in the value of representational art. He admires the work of John Singer Sargent, Jeremy Lipking, Jules Lefébvre, Dame Laura Knight, and Anders Zorn, among others. He believes that beauty is a celebration of life and points to the divine. Beauty matters not because it promotes vanity, but because true beauty is a strong antidote to the all-prevailing meaning crises of our age.
His methods are based on atelier-style teaching. He does not passively present classes, but also regularly works on a piece of art during the lessons, which gives his students the opportunity to ask questions and learn through observation and example-based explanations.
(Without proper drawing skills, the quality of a student’s oil painting will suffer. Therefore, drawing lessons will be incorporated into the classes when deemed necessary).
